An Interview with New York’s very own; New York Romantic…; February 2021

Hash Halper RIP 1980-2021

New York’s own Hash Halper, aka “New York Romantic,” sat down with me to discuss his first solo show at the gallery, Art of Our Century.” Hash’s work is recognizable to any New Yorker who spends much of their time in lower Manhattan. His hearts recognizably patter the streets. Even if you do not know his name, it is to be sure that his hearts will always put a smile on your face.

Hash

My name is Hash Halper, and I am a New York Artist.

Rowynn

Are you from here?

Hash

I was born in Philadelphia.

Rowynn

How long have you been here?

Hash

For 25 years.

Rowynn

Wow! Okay, so you\’re like a New Yorker, New Yorker at this point!

Hash

I am New York Romantic

Rowynn

What gave you the inspiration to start making the hearts around the city? I mean, most people are familiar with them from just walking down the street.

Hash

I was dotting the “I” at a bakery for work for the morning bagels, at Bagels and Bialys. So it comes from the “I” in Bialy. And it gave me a really good feeling. So I felt like putting that out into the streets.

Rowynn

And how long ago was that?

Hash

Seven years

Rowynn

You see your work all over Manhattan. Do you ever put it anywhere in Brooklyn? Or is there a particular reason you pick a spot?

Hash

I usually do it in downtown Manhattan because it\’s where I live. And I\’ve hit up Brooklyn a little bit.

Rowynn

Is this your first solo show?

Hash

It\’s my first solo show at a gallery.

Rowynn

How did you choose this space?

Hash

Suzanne Scott, the artist, hired me to draw hearts for her opening here. So I became acquainted with Timothy at the gallery. I sent him a message about working together in the future regarding my art, and then he hit me up about the show.

Rowynn

Okay, so a little off-topic. What is your favorite breakfast food?

Hash

Bob Dylan always wondered, like, “Who cares what I eat?” I do a lot of fruit and chia seeds. My last practice concoction is a blueberry shake with aloe and chia.

Rowynn

Is there anything particular that makes that such a great breakfast?

Hash

I mean, it is super healthy, mental health food. So it\’s like, it\’s full of good sugars. And aloe is really good for you. And chia seeds are like in the top five foods in the world. For nutrients. It’s just a nice little shake for the morning.

Rowynn

Yeah. Good to go! It’s like a power shake!

Last question. If people who don’t live in New York want to see your work somewhere? Is it possible?

Hash

People can check out the gallery website, and my Instagram is New York Romantic!

Rowynn

Awesome! Thank you! And congrats on the show again!

Hash

Thank you!

Hash’s show ends February 28th. If you are in New York, come and check it out before it closes! The name of the exhibit is “Blueberry Herring.”

Just be careful on your way out to dust off all the chalk from your clothes…
