Pixy Liao: Your Gaze Belongs to Me

Currently on view at Fotografiska (NYC) is Shanghai native Pixy Liao’s “Your Gaze Belongs to Me.” The work is both explorative and reveals the intimacy between her and her long-term partner. The photographic works are part of an ongoing series titled “Experimental Relationship.”

Initially, the project started when Pixy was studying at a university in Tennessee. She met another student while at school from Japan, who was a musician. From that moment on, she took the initiative to create a documented experience of their relationship.

The exhibition on view at Fotografiska includes over 50 pieces, which also stem from a second series titled, “For Your Eyes Only.” These works incorporate photography, video, and sculptural elementals. This is Pixy’s first museum solo show.

From the press release, “In her photographs, shot with cinematic warmth and a somewhat laid-back, “vintage aesthetic,” Liao often portrays herself in a dominant role, while her boyfriend assumes positions of submission. These subtle stagings intelligently reverse “expected” gender roles. Five years her junior, Liao credits Moro as the inspiration for this ongoing series, explaining –

Moro made me realize that heterosexual relationships do not need to be standardized. The purpose of this experiment is to break the inherent relationship model and reach a new equilibrium. Your Gaze Belongs to Me is curated for Fotografiska by Holly Roussell.”

Pixy shoots with a 645 medium format camera. The film is then processed and scanned, and printed.

This exhibition runs through September 5, 2021, so if you find yourself in New York City this summer, make sure to check it out! For more information on the exhibition, click here.
